Gospel Depth Launch

My Dear Friends,

I hope this announcement finds you well and flourishing in Christ! I have the joyful privilege of proclaiming to you the birth of our new nonprofit ministry called Gospel Depth! Gospel Depth is now officially up and running and becoming fully operational. I am personally so excited and thankful to the Lord for this new chapter in our ministry. Gospel Depth has come into existence to advance “biblical theology for the building and renewing of Christ’s Church”.

Gospel Depth has been created to house the new ministry that the Lord has made clear to Sue and me is our new calling. For the last six years we have been sensing Christ leading me to devote my full time and energy to a ministry of being “a theologian for the Church”. The call became very clear a year and a half ago, and I have been working hard for the last 18 months making sure this call was genuine and preparing to launch this new stage in ministry. That time has now come, and I wanted to personally and joyfully announce it to you!

This call to be used of God to help deepen the biblical and theological foundations and content of the Church’s message and ministry seems so right for me at this point in my life. The need is so obvious! Christian Lite is everywhere. 50% of American pastors 35 and under have no theological education at all. Two of my mentors and heroes, John Stott and J. I. Packer, are right when they say “the American Church is a mile wide and an inch deep”. The need is huge! I see it more than I ever have. After 40 years of pastoring (I began my first full time pastoral position on April 1, 1973) and often “professoring” in Christian Colleges, seminaries and mission fields simultaneously, I am confident the Lord is calling me to embrace this task with everything I can muster. Recent months of immersion in this new ministry lifestyle have confirmed this call even more. My training, experience, gifting, passion and encouragement from ministry associates have all come together in such a delightful way to meet such real and gigantic needs that I can’t thank the Lord enough!

We have some ideas, but we are not sure exactly what Gospel Depth will look like as it evolves. We are excited to watch God work, but as of now we are planning three main areas of ministry:

1) Teaching, preaching, consulting and mentoring in all things biblical and theological. We hope to work with churches, pastors, leaders and leadership teams, Christian ministry and mission organizations, special groups and any Christians who want to better understand their faith and their culture to live and minister more effectively for Christ. We plan to do this, as much as possible, relationally, contextually (tailor-made strategies for each situation) and affordably.

2) Writing. Producing books (like my recent A Basic Theology for Christ-Followers) and shorter pieces dealing with key theological issues and questions facing the Church.

3) Continuing and expanding my role as a theologian to the Church in Haiti (which I have been doing for over 25 years).

I wanted you to know about Gospel Depth so that you could pray fervently for us as we launch and “go public”. I strongly long that Gospel Depth will bring glory only to Christ (certainly not to me) and that Gospel Depth will unfold in the plan of God to be just what He wants. Would you please kindly pray for us in these early days of launching Gospel Depth that God will have His perfect way with us? Also, word of mouth may well be the main way God develops Gospel Depth and its ministry. If you know of churches, pastors, leadership teams or groups that could benefit from our ministry, it would be great if you would get them in contact with us. I will be eternally grateful for your prayers for Gospel Depth and your networking with us. We will keep you updated as to how the Lord moves. You are important to me! Thanks and Blessings.
